Vinnie Mazzilli (little vinny) #17 There
is so much I am planning to say about little Vinny that it
will have to wait for another day. But for starters, I
think he was an all-city quarterback in high school, he was
the fastest person on the field. He caught anything JImmy
threw near him and he was a great and smart defensive
back.. Against the Lynvets at St. Raphels when they had the
ball on our 3 yard line little Vinny called the dive play
they ran--we stopped them for a loss. They tried the end
run that had brought them down to the 3 but Vinny broke
through the line behind the play and ran Mike D'Amato down
for a 7 yard loss. Then they tried the same thing to the
other side and Vinny did it again--another 7 yard loss. It
was now 4th and 15! They tried a field goal, (modesty
prevents me from identifying the player who hit the ball at
the line of scrimmage) Little Vinny caught the ball on the
fly and returned for a few yards. Four big plays when we
needed them most and he was there
GO TO PHOTOS to see photo of Vinny catching a TD pas
In the photo above Little Vinnie catches a touchdown pass
against the Lynvets in our 13-0 win in the championship
playoff game in 1963. That year he was voted the
outstanding offensive back in the league. (photo supplied
by Torchy--it is a copy of one that hangs in his fooball
shrine.)
NOTE all these photos are also in the PHOTOS section where
you will be able to enlarge them if you want to.
This is a photo of Vinnie against Electchester in the 1962
championship game.
Here he is against the Lynvets in 1962 at Farmer's oval
combining on a tackle.
#35 is Joe Florenza, #82 is Bobby Blake, #64 is Herman
Dreier, #19 on the ground is Decatur Rodgers, #8 in the
background inTommy Wilson and the Blue Face mask #33 is
Roger Smith (me) and #55 is Bob Werkmeister. The Poor guy
didn't have much of a chance on this play. I don't know the
Lynvet numbers (is #8 Bob Schmidt?).
The second photo is probably Vinnie returning a punt.
This picture is from the same game. I think he is
intercepting a pass since Decature is off to his right we
must be on defense.
The 1962 champs.
I m not sure but this may also be against Electchester.
This picture is also probably from the 1962 championship
against Electchester.
